The Johns Hopkins Home Safety Project and Community Canvassing Campaign is a program run by the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Baltimore City Fire Department. It is a program meant to raise awareness and teach fire safety in the home. Baltimore has one of the highest rates of death or injury as a result of fire in the country. I joined the team for six months in 2010 on the neighborhood sweeps during which the fire department installed smoke detectors in homes in different neighborhoods in East Baltimore and students from Johns Hopkins conducted surveys with the residents. The Johns Hopkins CARES Center was also present at many of these sites. The mobile safety center is a forty-foot vehicle built as a house on wheels with fun, interactive exhibits and low-cost safety products. It visits Baltimore neighborhoods to teach parents and caregivers about the injury risks children face at home and ways to make the home a safer place.
